PROGETTO MARTHA ARGERICH

The ninth MARTHA ARGERICH PROJECT, promoted by the Lugano Festival, Swiss radio channel Rete Due and BSI Bank, will again bring together some 50 artists around the great pianist. The event includes talented young musicians and lesser-known artists as well as renowned names.

Designed as a showcase for ensemble music, the event is presented as a workshop, with artists in residence invited to play rarely performed compositions alongside masterpieces from their repertoire. This has created a unique formula, based around a group of musicians who are particularly keen to lend their abilities and expertise and take part in a stimulating exchange of experiences. The event will be not be limited to local audiences; Swiss and other European stations will broadcast the event to people much further afield, and recordings will be available too. This year EMI Music is also releasing a boxed CD set of the best of each event in the series, offering a comprehensive listening experience of the most important highlights of the initiative.

This year's programme is also a commemorative one: the bicentenary of Fryderyk Chopin and Robert Schumann occurs. Martha Argerich has chosen to play works by these two composers with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana – the Concerto in A Minor by Schumann and the Concerto No. 1 by Chopin. The orchestra will be conducted by Jacek Kapszyk and Alexander Vedernikov. Other Schumann pieces in the programme include: Trio in G Minor opus 110, Fünf Stücke im Volkston and Märchenbilder (Fairytale Pictures) opus 113 with Renaud and Gautier Capuçon and Lyda Chen, as well as the Adagio and Allegro opus 70 with the great violist Yuri Bashmet, appearing as a guest at the festival for the first time. Chopin's work will also receive further attention, with Argerich and Mischa Maisky performing his Sonata for Cello. The two French artists and the famous cellist are regular participants in the event, alongside celebrities such as Dora Schwarzberg, Lilya Zilberstein, Nelson Goerner and Nicholas Angelich. Pianists naturally make up the majority of the participants.

It has now become traditional for real musical families to take part in the MARTHA ARGERICH PROJECT. This year Alexander Mogilevsky, a key figure at the event since the beginning, will give a recital with his brother Maxim and his famous father Eugene. On 22 June, Martha Argerich will team up will Stephen Kovacevich (who will be celebrating his 70th birthday) to perform Bartók's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion. In the final concert, the great pianist will take part in an evening dedicated entirely to American musicals. The best-known songs of Gershwin, Rogers, Bernstein and Ellington will be performed in arrangements for voice and two pianos by David Miller. The presence of numerous South American artists, such as Gabriela Montero, Sergio Tiempo, Karin Lechner, Eduardo Hubert and Daniel Rivera, will add a Latin flavour to this year's repertoire. This will be enhanced by the performance of a Concerto for two pianos and orchestra by the Argentinian composer Federico Jusid, dedicated to Sergio Tiempo and his sister Karin Lechner.

As in last year’s festival, there will also be a masterclass led by the great violinist Ivry Gitlis at the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana. Lastly, we must mention the participation of the Coro della Radiotelevisione Svizzera, conducted by Diego Fasolis, who will sing some beautiful vocal works by Schumann.

A detailed, up-to-date programme of the event, which will run from 11 June to 1 July 2010, will be available on the website www.rsi.ch/argerich. You can also listen to the concerts broadcast by Radiotelevisione Svizzera, both live and in videostreaming format on this website.
